“Luke, you really need to be more careful next time. And you don’t even have anyone around to look after you. Why don’t you let Laura stay and take care of you for a while? It’s not as if she’s busy right now, and things at our company are going smoothly these days, so there’s nothing urgent to handle anyway.”
Suddenly, Marguerite realized this was a perfect opportunity—a chance for the two of them to grow closer. With no one else at his side, Luke really couldn’t manage on his own. Relying on just the housekeeper or the cleaners wasn’t enough, and Marguerite could imagine how lonely hospital life must be. If Laura was here every day, maybe their feelings for each other would finally deepen.
“It’s fine, really. I’m used to being on my own,” Luke replied, his voice calm but firm. “Besides, I’m not going to be up and walking in a day or two. I’ll probably be stuck here for a while. The surgery was recent, and there’s still a long way to go before I’m back to normal. There are several injuries to deal with—one operation isn’t going to fix everything.”
He spoke slowly, making it clear that he understood exactly what Marguerite was trying to do—even now, she was still hoping to match him and Laura together.
The truth was, Marguerite wasn’t sure how to fix things between them. She knew, deep down, that maybe they just weren’t right for each other, but Laura clearly hadn’t given up on Luke. She still cared about him, and that made it hard for Marguerite not to root for them.
Sometimes, it seemed like they really were a good match—on paper, anyway. Laura was thoughtful and attentive, and someone like her by Luke’s side would surely bring him happiness. What Marguerite couldn’t understand was why Luke insisted on going through life alone. Was it really so terrible to let someone in? Why couldn’t he just give himself a chance to accept her?
Still, it didn’t feel quite right to insist. They barely knew each other, and she wasn’t sure how he’d take it.
“All right…” Luke frowned, clearly reluctant, but what else could he do? Both of them were already here, and Laura had offered so earnestly to help. How could he possibly refuse without hurting Marguerite’s feelings?
