Deep down, he honestly couldn’t understand why everyone seemed so determined to push the two of them together. From what he could see, they really didn’t seem all that compatible.
“Alright,” Marguerite said, “since someone’s here to look after you, I feel much better. Things are quiet at the office these days, but there’s a lot going on at home. My grandmother might need surgery soon, so I just can’t be here for you as much as I’d like. But with my Laura here, I can relax. If anything comes up, promise me you’ll call right away. And if you run into any trouble you can’t handle, don’t try to keep it from me.”
As a friend, she truly did care about Luke, and she genuinely hoped he’d recover soon. More than that, she wanted to see things move forward between him and Laura—she was convinced that everything happening now would only bring the two of them closer.
“Alright, it’s settled then,” Luke agreed without hesitation. His gaze was serious as he looked at the two of them.
He had no idea what to say next—he didn’t even know how to face them.
“Well, if there’s nothing else, I’ve got a few things to take care of. I’ll leave you two alone. Honestly, I was worried something had happened to you, but now that I see you’re alright, I feel much better.”
Marguerite was clearly giving them space, hoping to create an opportunity for the two of them, and she meant it when she said she wanted the best for them.
“I really am fine. You two are just worrying for nothing. And if something did happen, do you honestly think I wouldn’t tell you? You’re my best friend,” Luke said, his voice warm and firm. They were still business partners, after all, and the excuse to keep her by his side was more than enough for him—he’d never dared hope for anything more.
Laura understood immediately. After everything that had happened last time, she’d found a new confidence, and she really wasn’t the same person anymore.
She knew this opportunity was rare, and if she truly liked him, she should be brave enough to say so. Maybe Luke hadn’t noticed her feelings simply because they hadn’t spent much time together—and she’d always been so nervous around him, afraid to even look him in the eye.
But if she liked him, why not go for it?
“Goodbye, Ms. Taylor!” Laura called after her.
