Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 327

After Marguerite stepped out, her spirits noticeably lifted. She felt a renewed sense of hope for both of them. It really did seem impossible for the two of them to be apart now. And, more importantly, she believed that spending so much time together would only deepen their feelings.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Leonard Murphy left the office and headed straight to his grandmother’s house. He couldn’t just let things end like this, and there was no way he’d give up on her surgery—nor would he let his grandmother give up so easily. He decided to talk to her face-to-face, hoping that maybe, just maybe, he could change her mind.

“Leonard, I know why you’re here,” Mrs. Murphy said as soon as he walked in. “You want me to go through with the operation, don’t you? I’ve already explained it to you all—I simply won’t do it. I can’t take on that kind of risk at my age. Do you know how much pressure this surgery puts on me? How much pain it would cause? I’m old now, Leonard. I don’t want to gamble with what time I have left, and I certainly don’t want to become a burden to you.”

She paused, her eyes softening. “I know you’re doing all this for my sake. You’ve given so much—at work, at home, every single day you worry about me. That means a great deal to me, truly.” She smiled weakly, reaching for his hand.

“But you have to understand, sweetheart. Sometimes, at my age, you just want to let go. I don’t want to face any more pain or hardship. Even though you say this surgery isn’t very risky and that recovery should be quick, every person’s body is different. My health isn’t what it used to be. I’ve already been through several major surgeries—I just can’t do it again.”

She’d said everything on her mind—her fears, her gratitude, her exhaustion. No matter what, though, she wouldn’t agree to the surgery. She was determined not to let them waste any more time and energy on her.

So much had happened to their family lately; it felt like one crisis after another. The only reason they’d made it this far was because she and Leonard had been holding everything together, refusing to let go.

In the end, she didn’t know what else to say. She didn’t know how to face her grandson’s unwavering concern. Sometimes, she felt she’d let Leonard down.

Seeing the resolve in her eyes, Leonard realized she’d made up her mind.

“All right, Grandma,” he said at last. “If this is really what you want, I won’t pressure you anymore. But you have to promise me one thing—you’ll take your medicine on time, every day. No excuses, and definitely no playing games with your health.”
