After leaving the hospital, Marguerite called Laura and arranged to meet at the office, determined to finish up the projects and loose ends that hadn’t been properly handed over.
When she arrived, Laura was already waiting in her office. It didn’t take her long to notice something was off. “Ms. Taylor, you look a bit pale. Did he give you trouble again?” she asked, her voice full of concern.
Marguerite offered a faint smile and shook her head. “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. Let’s get my patents in order. These ones are especially important—I’m not ready to let them go.”
These patents were the result of countless sleepless nights, Marguerite’s own sweat and perseverance. They belonged to her alone and had nothing to do with Benjamin. She had to take them with her.
“Of course, Ms. Taylor,” Laura replied, though her face was still creased with worry.
They got to work.
Suddenly, Laura’s jaw dropped in disbelief. “Ms. Taylor, what’s going on here?”
Marguerite took the folder from Laura and flipped through the pages. Her heart sank—her patents were now registered under Fiona’s name.
“This has to be Benjamin’s doing. He’s really gone too far this time,” Laura said, clenching her fists in anger.
Marguerite’s lips curved in a bitter, self-deprecating smile. She loathed herself for ever trusting Benjamin so completely, for handing over her patents for him to manage. If she hadn’t started sorting through her files today, she might never have noticed the switch.
With these patents, Fiona could easily qualify for her degree, and she’d have the leverage to negotiate with other companies as well.
She had been blind, and everything that had happened lately felt like a punishment for her own mistakes.
“So what now, Ms. Taylor? Are we just going to let Fiona get away with this?” Laura asked, her frustration barely contained.
Marguerite’s eyes were cool but resolute. “She doesn’t have what it takes. If she wants to steal my work, she’ll have to prove she’s worthy.”
