“Don’t worry, Dad. From now on, Hogan and I will visit you both often—and I’ll bring my girlfriend along so you can get to know her better.”
Hogan could see how happy his mother was, and he knew right away that his parents must approve of his girlfriend. If they didn’t, his mother would never be this cheerful.
“Mom, I really feel so lucky these days. Having you and Dad by my side, always supporting me, always loving me no matter what—I couldn’t ask for more. I promise, I’ll make the most of my life from now on, and I won’t give you any more trouble. You can count on me.”
Marguerite couldn’t help but think of everything that had happened in the past. She truly felt guilty toward her parents. They’d always given her and Hogan the very best, yet she’d spent so long lost in her own world—so convinced she’d found the love of her life that she was willing to turn her back on her family for it.
Now, looking back, it all seemed so foolish. Why had she ever done something so reckless?
All she wanted now was to spend more time with her parents, to make up for everything she’d missed. She wanted to love them wholeheartedly, to make sure that from this day forward, every day they spent together would be filled with lightness and joy.
“If only, next time you come back, you could bring me a grandchild—now that would really make our family complete. And when Hogan gets married and has a child, I could help both of you look after your kids. But if you both bring them at the same time, I might just be overwhelmed!”
Marguerite understood. Their relationship had always been like this, so she’d never minded. As far as she was concerned, as long as Leonard could sort things out at the company, that was enough for her.
“You’re already engaged. All that’s left is signing a marriage license, and frankly, I don’t think that’s much of an obstacle for you two. You both care for each other and have decided to build a life together. The paperwork can wait until you’re ready.”
“But you really should be thinking about having kids. You’re not exactly getting any younger, and you’ve been engaged long enough. Why wait? Even old Mrs. Murphy from your in-laws’ side told me she’s been longing to see her great-grandchild!”
