Marguerite kept her thoughts to herself, unsure of how to even begin expressing the turmoil inside. Sometimes she felt like she was just arguing with herself, getting tangled up in issues she couldn't even properly define. Besides, what was the point? Their relationship had always been this way, a constant, unchanging dynamic. Voicing her doubts wouldn't change how he saw her.
“Then what is it?” Leonard’s voice was gentle. “I think we should be able to talk about anything. There’s no need to hold back, especially when I can see something is making you unhappy. I want us to solve our problems together, so I can see you smile every day.”
Leonard could clearly sense that something was wrong. After all the time they’d spent together, he’d grown attuned to her moods; he could tell the moment her spirit dimmed. He mentally replayed their recent interactions, confused. *Have I done something to upset her?*
"Leonard," Marguerite began, her voice barely above a whisper, "there’s something I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time. But I’ve always hesitated because I wasn't sure if I should."
Seeing his insistent gaze, she took a shaky breath.
“Marguerite, why would you think that?” Leonard was stunned, a look of genuine hurt crossing his face. “My love for you will never change. I’m with you because I want to be, not because of some family arrangement. It was always about my feelings for you. I know I’ve been busy lately, and maybe I’ve been neglectful, but please, never question my love. I chose to be with you because I love you. Maybe I haven’t said it enough, but you must never, ever doubt how I feel.”
He had never imagined she felt this way, and a profound sense of guilt washed over him.
