It felt like she’d spent half the year in and out of hospitals, and each time, the outcome was the same. She knew her condition. Without surgery, medication was only a temporary fix, and any emotional distress could trigger a fatal attack. What was the point of going back? She’d rather be at home. She wasn’t going to endure the torment of another hospital visit, another grim prognosis from a doctor. She was old. Her time was up.
“Grandmother, I know what you’re thinking,” Leonard said, his voice low and strained. “If you don’t go to the hospital, then I’m walking away from the company. From this day forward, I won’t have anything more to do with it.”
It was a desperate, last-ditch effort.
Mrs. Murphy’s eyes flew open. She was utterly stunned. She never thought he would use the company—her life’s work—to threaten her.
“You fool!” she cried, a surge of adrenaline making her voice stronger. “The company isn’t something you can just abandon! I entrusted it to you because I believe in you!”
“Mom, he’s already offered to give up the company, what more do you want?” Aaron interjected, seizing the opportunity. “Don’t you worry, my brother and I can handle everything. The important thing is for you to get to the hospital. We can’t let this wait.”
