Edith’s words were venomous, designed to hit where they hurt most.
“That’s enough!” Leonard’s voice was like a whip crack. He had tolerated their insults against him, but he would not allow them to attack Marguerite.
“Whatever happened in her past is none of your business,” he said, stepping in front of Marguerite, shielding her. “She is my wife now. Worry about your own affairs.”
“She started it!” Edith shrieked. “You didn’t say anything when she was attacking us! Don’t think you can still act like you’re the king of this family. Everything you have, you owe to us. You’re nothing but an outsider!”
Years of resentment poured out of her. Before, she had tolerated him because he ran the company, but ever since she learned he wasn't a true Murphy, all pretense of respect had vanished. In her mind, Leonard owed them a lifetime of gratitude for raising him.
“Please,” she called out, her voice a fragile whisper that barely carried into the hallway. “Can you please stop fighting? I’m already like this… if you have any pity for me at all, just stop.”
Her voice trembled. “I know you’re all unhappy. I know you think you deserve the company. But I had my reasons for giving it to Leonard. I couldn’t bear to watch my life’s work be destroyed by your greed.”
