“Who do you think you are, talking to us like that?” Aaron shot back, his face contorted with fury. “You’re both outsiders here. The only reason you’re even allowed to stand in this hallway is out of respect for my mother. This is our family, our business, and it has nothing to do with you. Don’t you dare lecture me about how to treat my own mother. You have no idea how much I care about her.”
“She’s my mother,” he spat. “You think I need to put on a show for strangers like you?”
He and his brother had already made their plans. As soon as their mother recovered, they would pressure her into changing her will and handing the company over to them. For now, they were united by a common goal. Aaron was confident that once they had control, his brother would eventually return to his life overseas, leaving him in charge.
“I don’t want to fight with you, Aaron,” Marguerite said, her voice trembling with rage. “Not here. Not now. Your mother is in critical condition. Can’t you find it in your heart to show her some compassion?” She shook her head in disgust. “Forget it. There’s no point talking to people like you. But I’m warning you, if she suffers another setback because of you, you will answer to us.”
Marguerite had never cared about the Murphy fortune. Her own family was wealthy; her brother managed their company empire with great success, and their influence was easily on par with the Murphys’. But for some reason, Aaron carried himself with an insufferable arrogance, acting as if her marriage to Leonard was some great honor bestowed upon her. It was a bizarre and infuriating attitude.
She had never cared about wealth or status. Even if Leonard lost everything, she would stand by his side without a second thought. They were bound together now, and she had no intention of ever leaving him.
“Don’t lecture me, Marguerite,” Edith sneered, stepping forward. “We all know what you are. Who are you to preach about family when you haven’t spoken to your own parents in years? What’s this, suddenly playing the part of the devoted daughter? Who are you trying to fool?”
