“It’s so late,” Marguerite sighed as they walked toward the house. “Let’s just go in and rest. I’m exhausted today. I don’t have the energy for anything else.”
She had hoped they could have a quiet dinner together, something they hadn’t done in ages because of their hectic schedules. But now, with her grandmother in the hospital, all she could think about was visiting her again. For now, a home-cooked meal from Wilma and the comfort of being with the man she loved was all she needed. Where they ate didn’t matter, as long as they were together.
“Of course,” Leonard said, sensing not just her physical fatigue but the mental exhaustion of dealing with his family. “Whatever makes you happy.”
“Leonard,” she said softly as they stepped inside, “you don’t have to change for me. I just want you to be yourself. I used to think… I used to think our life together was a little boring.”
She met his gaze, her expression earnest. “But after everything that’s happened, I see how much you care, how hard you’re trying to love me. That’s all that matters. It’s not boring at all. Maybe this is just what it’s like when two people have been together for a while.”
Marguerite had once believed that love had to be a grand, dramatic affair, a whirlwind romance. But now, she realized that having a steady, reliable man by her side was a true blessing. She didn’t need to ask for anything more.
“No, it’s my fault,” Leonard insisted, his voice filled with remorse. “I never stopped to think about what you truly wanted. I thought as long as I loved you with everything I had, that would be enough. I never considered your feelings. That’s on me.”
He had been reflecting on this a lot lately. He was the kind of man who, once he recognized a flaw in how he treated the woman he loved, would do anything to fix it. Her happiness was all that mattered.
He felt a pang of guilt. Since they’d gotten together, he hadn’t exactly given her a fairytale life. He hadn’t even given her the most basic thing: his time. They’d never truly traveled together, never really gone on a proper date. He used to think those things weren’t important, but now he realized how much he had neglected. He had always dreamed of traveling the world with the woman he loved, but reality had been harsh. Ever since their engagement, the company had been one crisis after another, leaving him no time to escape. All he could do was ask her to be patient.
