“We have our whole lives ahead of us,” Marguerite said gently. “You don’t have to put so much pressure on yourself. You’re already exhausted. The last thing I want is for you to worry more because of my silly insecurities.”
She smiled. “If you really feel like you owe me, you can make it up to me later, when you have the time. Honestly, sometimes I just wish you’d walk away from the company. It doesn’t seem to bring you any joy.”
But she knew they had to persevere for his grandmother’s sake, enduring the immense pressure and the constant accusations that they were only there to steal the inheritance from the family’s “rightful” sons. Despite it all, Leonard had never thought of giving up.
“I promise I’ll make up for everything I owe you, and more,” Leonard said, his voice thick with emotion. “All I’ve ever wanted is to see you happy by my side, but that seems so difficult right now.”
He sighed. “I wish I could drop everything and spend every waking moment with you, but it’s just not that simple.”
When they entered the room, the old woman was resting in bed, her eyes closed. At the sound of the door opening, she fluttered them open and smiled faintly when she saw them.
“You’re here,” she said, her voice stronger than the day before. “I told you, I’m fine. You don’t need to keep rushing over. Is everything at the company settled? You two shouldn’t be coming here so late when you have to work the next day. I worry about you.”
