“Grandma, my name is Antony,” the young man said, his voice gentle and calm. “When Dad told me you were sick, I dropped everything to come back and see you.”
“Even though I’ve been away, I feel like I know you. Dad told me how brilliant you were in your youth, and he always said my passion for business must have come from you. It’s in my genes.”
He smiled warmly. “I hope you’ll focus on getting well soon. I’ve taken an extended leave from my work so I can stay in the country and spend more time with you.”
Antony projected an aura of sunshine and sincerity. His tone was soft, completely unlike his father’s. More importantly, he didn’t seem to have the same greedy ambition; he radiated a sense of peace.
Marguerite found herself thinking that perhaps he wasn’t a bad person. There was a refined, gentle quality about him that was genuinely comforting. If he was truly capable, she thought, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad for him to inherit the company. Leonard had never wanted it anyway. If giving the company to Antony would solve the family’s endless disputes, it might just be the perfect way for them to escape.
As she looked at the grandson she’d never known, tears welled in her eyes and streamed down her cheeks.
“Grandma, please don’t get emotional,” Antony said softly, his voice full of concern. “Don’t cry. I’ll stay here with you. I know you need to avoid stress right now, so please, stay calm.”
