Benjamin felt a twinge of guilt, but there was no getting around it—he had to speak plainly. He hoped Fiona would take the hint and not make things harder for him.
“I know. It’s all my fault,” Fiona said, her voice small and full of regret. “If it weren’t for me, Maggie wouldn’t have argued with you. This mess is all because of me.”
She looked so pitiful that Benjamin’s heart softened. He reached out and gently ran his hand through Fiona’s hair. “Don’t worry. Once I’ve smoothed things over with her, I’ll have more time to spend with you. I promise.”
Fiona’s eyes lit up. “I knew you were the best!” she cried, throwing her arms around him.
As she pressed against him, Benjamin wrapped his arms around her slender waist. The sight of Fiona’s flushed cheeks was enough to make his heart race. With a sister like this, and a beautiful girlfriend who adored him, wasn’t he the real winner in life?
“You know, we’ve always been this close,” he murmured. “I really didn’t think Maggie would mind. But I never expected she’d make such a scene out of jealousy, or that she’d blow up like that and turn the whole company upside down.”
“Maybe I should go apologize to her on your behalf,” Fiona suggested softly. “I’m sure Maggie didn’t mean it. She just loves you too much, that’s all.”
“But she was way too impulsive,” Fiona continued, her tone gentle but laced with criticism. “She never thinks about the consequences. Look at you, Ben. You’ve been running yourself ragged these days, and you’ve even lost weight.”
Every word from Fiona was sweet and concerned, but beneath the surface, she was subtly putting Marguerite down. Benjamin, however, only felt that Fiona was thoughtful and caring.
He knew she’d suffered, too—she’d lost her spot at university because Marguerite had revoked the patent, and it had hit her hard. Yet Fiona had never once brought it up herself. That kind of grace moved Benjamin deeply. How could he not love her?
“Marguerite really doesn’t know her place,” he sighed. “If she were even half as considerate as you, I wouldn’t be so stressed.”
