Marguerite was utterly bewildered—what on earth was she even supposed to be competing for?
Fiona, meanwhile, watched Benjamin grow colder and more dismissive toward Marguerite, and couldn’t help but feel a rush of satisfaction.
Honestly, Marguerite had no right to compete with her for anything. Whether it was Benjamin or Mrs. Taylor, it was obvious they both preferred her. Fiona scoffed inwardly at the very idea.
She put on her most sympathetic voice. “Come on, don’t blame Maggie. This is really all my fault. Maggie, please don’t be upset with Ben. If you’re angry at anyone, it should be me.”
Marguerite’s tone was ice-cold. “First of all, I don’t lose my temper that easily, and certainly not over people like you. Second, stop calling me ‘sis’—we’re not nearly that close. And for the record? I don’t have a sister as shameless as you.”
Fiona’s face went pale, her eyes turning red and brimming with tears, as if she might break down at any moment.
She looked so pitiful that it would have tugged at anyone’s heartstrings—at least, it seemed to have Benjamin completely under her spell again.
“Marguerite! Have you said enough?” Benjamin snapped. “What exactly has Fiona done to you? I know you’re still upset about what happened between us, but Fiona is completely innocent here.”
“Fiona, huh? You sure say her name awfully affectionately,” Laura chimed in with a snide remark.
Benjamin sighed in exasperation. “Marguerite, you’re jealous, aren’t you? But Fiona is just my sister, nothing more. There’s nothing else between us.”
Marguerite rolled her eyes. “Can you not understand plain English? I said I don’t care! Excuse me, could you please wrap up this necklace for me?”
“Marguerite, that’s enough!” Benjamin’s patience finally snapped. He’d tried to be reasonable, but she was acting like an immovable force, lashing out like a cornered tigress.
