Marguerite’s lips twitched in exasperation. She’d truly had enough.
“Laura, let’s get out of here.”
“Absolutely!” Laura replied, her scalp prickling. Neither of them wanted to stay another minute.
“Wait! Excuse me, miss, could you hold on a second?”
Suddenly, a store clerk rushed after them, calling out to Marguerite.
“What is it?” Marguerite frowned, her annoyance clear as she turned back.
The clerk flinched under her gaze but pressed on, “Sorry, miss, you forgot to take this necklace with you.”
“I already said I don’t want it. If this gentleman wants it so badly, just sell it to him.”
“Exactly!” Benjamin sneered, narrowing his eyes at the clerk. “She already said she didn’t want it. Why are you trying to force it on her?”
Sweat beaded on the clerk’s brow. Why did she have to get stuck in the middle of this? But the extra commission she’d been promised was on the line—she had to see this through.
“Ms. Taylor, this necklace was a personal gift from our owner’s son. It’s no longer for sale.”
“What did you say?!”
“Who is this mysterious benefactor? Marguerite, are you really seeing another man behind my back?” Benjamin was practically vibrating with anger, on the verge of exploding.
Who was this infuriating man who’d gone to such lengths to prepare a gift for her—and to give it to her in such a public way? Was he deliberately provoking Benjamin?
“And what business is it of yours?” Marguerite shot back, her voice icy. She took the necklace in hand, her expression softening for just a moment. “Please thank your employer’s son for me. I truly love this gift.”
Love was an understatement—the necklace was exactly her style. No wonder she’d been drawn to it at first sight, even wanting to buy it herself. From every angle, it suited her perfectly.
Marguerite had to admit, she was charmed by these little gestures and surprises. Even though she hadn’t yet met the man behind them, his thoughtful care, his quiet attention, and the way he seemed to protect her from afar—all of it warmed her battered, weary heart.
