Looking back over the years, she’d always been the one giving everything—quietly, selflessly, convinced she’d found true love and aching to pour out her heart and soul for it.
But in the end, she’d only been fooling herself. Without even realizing it, she’d walked straight into someone else’s trap and wound up tangled in her own web, letting down everyone who genuinely cared about her.
At least she’d woken up before it was too late. If anything, she ought to thank Fiona for that.
A gentle smile curved her lips, and any lingering bitterness or resentment dissolved completely.
That didn’t mean she’d let Benjamin off so easily, though. What was rightfully hers—no one was going to take that away.
“Mr. Foster, enjoy your time with your sister. I’m leaving now.”
Marguerite clutched the necklace, touched by the thoughtfulness behind it.
Laura was practically bouncing with excitement beside her. “Oh my gosh, Ms. Taylor, this is just… it’s so romantic!”
Suddenly, Benjamin’s voice cut through the room, sharp and accusatory. “Marguerite! You’d better explain yourself! What’s going on here?! How dare you sneak around behind my back—cheating on me? Don’t even think about coming back to me after this!”
Marguerite didn’t bother listening. How does a guy like that even become so self-absorbed?
Then again, with a mother like Mrs. Foster—constantly doting on her precious son—it was no wonder Benjamin grew up so conceited.
Marguerite could hardly hide her disdain. Only someone like Mrs. Foster would treat Benjamin, of all people, like he was something special.
She shook her head with a soft laugh. Letting go of the past felt so good. She was genuinely, finally free.
Her resentment hadn’t really been about Benjamin, she realized, but about what she’d sacrificed for him.
After all, she’d poured so much of her heart into that relationship, only to end up like this. It would have been a lie to say it didn’t hurt.
But that was all behind her now. She was ready for a new beginning.
“Marguerite, stop right there!”
