Benjamin’s voice trembled with urgency as he asked, clearly worried about her.
He glanced at his watch—at this hour, she should have just landed. How could things have gone so wrong so quickly?
Fiona had flown in for her graduation ceremony today. After the ceremony, she was supposed to finally receive her degree.
“I’m already at campus,” she choked out between sobs, her words barely audible. “But the administration just told me I’m being accused of academic fraud. They’re not letting me graduate. And because of this, I… I might never be able to enroll anywhere else, ever again.”
Her crying grew even more desperate, her voice broken and trembling with helplessness.
All these years, Fiona had leaned on Benjamin for support. He’d moved mountains to help her get into a good university in the first place.
Now, just as she was about to graduate, everything had fallen apart. All her hard work seemed to have been for nothing.
“How could this happen? What exactly did the school say to you?” Benjamin’s voice was gentle but edged with panic. “Tell me everything, Fiona. Please don’t cry. I’m here for you. No matter what happens, I’ll help you through this.”
He ached to comfort her, but the whole situation made no sense. Everything should have been settled by now—how could it all unravel at the very last moment?
“I don’t know why they’re accusing me,” she whimpered. “They just told me I forged my academic work, and when I tried to ask for details, they threw me out. I really don’t know what to do anymore.”
She wept harder. The degree meant everything to her. She couldn’t rely on Benjamin forever—she needed to prove herself.
“Fiona, I can’t be there with you right now, but don’t panic. I’ll have someone book you a flight home right away. Come back first, and I’ll get to the bottom of this.”
Benjamin spoke with patient reassurance, though his heart twisted at the sound of her tears. He longed to be by her side, but all he could do was worry from afar.
As soon as he hung up, Benjamin dialed his assistant, ordering an immediate investigation into what had happened.
Meanwhile, across town—
Marguerite and Hogan were finishing dinner at a cozy restaurant Leonard had picked out. The food was excellent, and both of them genuinely enjoyed the meal—it was clear Leonard had put a lot of thought into the choice.
Afterwards, Marguerite took Hogan back to her hotel and arranged a separate room for him.
“Get some rest,” she said. “It’s late. We’ll go to the office in the morning.”
“It’s not that late,” Hogan replied, eager. “Let me go with you now. The sooner we get things settled, the sooner you can go home to Mom and Dad—they’re waiting for you.”
He was anxious; it had been so long since the family had all been together, and he couldn’t wait any longer.
Their parents had made him promise—no matter what, he had to bring his sister home as soon as possible.
