Hogan had definitely had too much to drink tonight. As soon as he got in the car, he fell asleep.
Marguerite sat quietly by herself, gazing out the window, her thoughts tangled and unsettled.
“You don’t have to be so reserved around me,” Leonard said gently. “After all, we’re meant to spend our lives together. Of course, it’s perfectly normal to be nervous the first time you meet me.”
He paused, his cold, steely eyes softening just a little. “I’ll give you time to get used to it. But next time we meet, I hope things won’t be as awkward as today.”
“I’ll get there, little by little,” Marguerite replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
The car pulled up in front of the hotel, and Marguerite was the first to get out.
“Wake up, we’re here!” she said, nudging Hogan. There was a hint of exasperation in her tone as she tried to rouse him. “You know you can’t hold your liquor, but you just had to show off tonight.”
Hogan blinked open bleary eyes, looking around in confusion. He seemed to have completely lost track of what had happened earlier.
“Let’s get you upstairs—it’s already so late,” Marguerite said, steadying him as they made their way inside.
She turned to Leonard before heading in. “Thank you for bringing us home. Have a safe drive back. We’ll head in now.” With a polite nod, she followed Hogan up to their room.
Leonard lingered outside, watching their retreating figures with a complicated expression. Only when they’d disappeared from view and he was sure they’d made it safely inside did he finally turn and head back to the car.
“Mr. Murphy, Ms. Taylor left her lipstick in the car. Should I run it up to her?” Jonas asked as he got in, holding up a tube he’d just found on the back seat.
Marguerite was the only woman who’d been in the car that night—this lipstick had to be hers.
“No need,” Leonard said, stopping Jonas before he could get out.
