“Come on, let’s have a drink!”
Mr. Zade’s tone left no room for argument as he filled her glass, the gesture firm and insistent.
“Here’s the deal—I’ll drink a full glass, and you take half,” he said with a wide grin.
He was so persistent it was impossible to turn him down. Marguerite had no choice but to raise her glass again.
Tonight, Mr. Zade was in high spirits, and it was obvious he was taking quite an interest in her.
Marguerite kept her guard up, instinctively inching away from him. After all, they were alone in this private room.
“Miss Taylor, I’ve heard about what happened lately. I know you’re the victim here—he never deserved you!”
He leaned in closer, his eyes sparkling with a combination of amusement and something more.
“You’re beautiful and straightforward, Miss Taylor. I think you have an amazing personality—I really like that about you…”
Marguerite could feel him edging even closer, almost unconsciously.
“Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Zade,” she replied with a polite smile. “I admit I misjudged someone before and got burned, but that’s all in the past. Now, I’m focused entirely on my work.”
She kept her tone cheerful and courteous, even as her discomfort grew. She desperately wanted to secure his cooperation for the patent launch, which allowed her to tolerate his behavior—up to a point.
“A strong, independent woman!” Mr. Zade declared, laughing heartily. “You can tell just by looking at you. As it happens, I’m single myself. Maybe you’ll give me a chance to pursue you?”
His laughter filled the room, but his gaze lingered on her in a way that made her skin crawl.
“Why don’t we leave it here for tonight? This is the patent proposal from our company; I’ll leave it right here for you. If you have time, I hope you’ll take a look.”
“Your assistant is still waiting outside, isn’t he? I’ll have him come in.”
She saw no reason to continue this meeting. Whether they’d end up working together was now entirely up to him.
Marguerite had no intention of closing a deal this way. If that’s what it took, she’d rather find someone else to work with.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mr. Zade’s smile faded, his expression turning sour.
“I think you may have had a bit too much, Mr. Zade.”
With that, Marguerite got to her feet and headed for the door. The private suite was silent, empty except for the two of them.
