Marguerite had sensed it for a while now—a prickling awareness that she was being watched. No matter what happened on her end, he always seemed to know about it almost instantly.
Honestly, even if he hadn’t stepped in to help, she would have found a way to handle things herself. She’d never let herself be framed and do nothing about it.
She simply smiled, saying nothing.
“Marguerite, you have to trust me and Mom and Dad. Anyone we pick for you, it’s because we truly believe you can build a future with them. We’d never do anything to hurt you.”
Hogan watched her, thinking maybe she still held on to some lingering feelings for Benjamin. He couldn’t help but try to reassure her.
Ever since he’d arrived, neither of them had brought up the topic. Only now, seizing the moment, did he finally broach it.
“Of course I trust you all. Things between Benjamin and me have already gone way too far, and I promise I have no intention of looking back. You don’t need to worry about that.”
“Honestly, all I want right now is to wrap things up here as soon as possible and get home to you and Mom and Dad. It’s been so long since I saw them—I really do miss them.”
“There were so many times before when I imagined going home, seeing them again, but I never had the courage. Back then, they were still angry, and I figured they wouldn’t even want to see me. But now, things are different. I’ll listen to you, I promise.”
As for Leonard, Marguerite didn’t feel much for him. He was distant, but there was also something steady about him—a calm reassurance that made her feel safe whenever he was around.
Hearing his sister say this, Hogan felt a wave of relief. His heart finally settled.
Back in her own room, Marguerite picked up her phone and hovered over Leonard’s number, hesitating. Should she call him?
Suddenly, her phone lit up. Leonard was calling her.
“If you hadn’t managed to walk out of that room safely yesterday, have you thought about what could have happened?” Leonard’s voice was suddenly sharp, demanding an answer.
Marguerite felt like a child being scolded for something she hadn’t considered. She didn’t know how to respond.
“From now on, I’ll make sure someone accompanies you to every business meeting. You’re not allowed to go alone anymore.” Leonard’s tone was firm—he wasn’t giving her any room to protest.
She felt an unmistakable pressure coming from him. Oddly enough, though, it didn’t bother her. If anything, she found herself drawn to it.
It was never like this with Benjamin. He had never made her feel truly cared for; not like this.
“I’ve asked my assistant to send you a few promising business contacts. You’ll find their information in your email—reach out to them directly.”
