Leonard had already taken care of everything for her, handling each detail with careful precision and thoughtfulness.
“I know you mean well,” Marguerite said, “but these projects are things I can handle myself. I don’t want anyone helping me.”
Having someone step in made her feel dependent, especially when it came to her work.
Even though her company was gone, she still had several ongoing projects, and she was confident she could start over.
“I just asked Jonas to connect you with a few companies that suit your experience. Whether anything comes of it is up to you—I won’t interfere,” Leonard replied.
He always knew where to draw the line, understanding perfectly what she appreciated and what she didn’t.
When it came to business, he only stepped in when it truly mattered, and otherwise kept his distance.
Hearing him say this, Marguerite felt reassured.
“Thank you,” she said quietly.
“You’re my fiancée. You don’t have to be so formal with me,” Leonard replied, a note of irritation in his voice at her constant politeness.
“It won’t happen again,” she promised.
After a bit more conversation, Marguerite ended the call.

A week later.
The companies Leonard had recommended all seemed like a great fit for her, with plenty of potential for growth.
Marguerite spent the next few days at her hotel, researching each company and setting up meetings with their CEOs.
He’d been waiting here for her a long time, and finally, Marguerite had shown up.
He had nothing left to lose now—fearless, reckless.
“What do you want?” Marguerite shot back, her voice steady. “Let me warn you, you’d better keep yourself in check. If I had the power to bring you down once, I can just as easily finish the job. Are you sure you want to push me?”
She could see the madness in his eyes—it was even worse than that night—but in broad daylight, she felt a little safer.
Mr. Zade let out a wild, bitter laugh. “I’ve already lost everything. What could possibly scare me now?”
“But there’s one thing I never got—one thing I still regret! I didn’t get you that night, and that’s haunted me ever since. Go ahead, destroy me. I dare you!”
He had nothing left to fear, nothing left to lose. He was determined to go after what he wanted, no matter the cost.
After being discharged from the hospital, he knew he’d soon have to answer for his actions, but this time, he’d snuck out—one last, desperate gamble.
