She had never expected anything from him, and honestly, he had always treated her well enough. In every critical moment, he would show up by her side.
That was something Benjamin had never done for her.
“Well then, if he won’t join you for dinner, I will. There’s no need to be so reserved around me—you may not remember, but I actually met you when you were little. You were probably too young to recall.”
“These past few years, while you’ve been away from your parents, your mother has often mentioned you to me. She misses you very much. Now that you’re about to get engaged, you should make time to go home and see her.”
So, Leonard’s mother knew about all these things too.
It made sense—they’d been close family friends with the Murphys for generations. Of course she would know.
“Thank you. I understand.”
“If you ever need anything, you can always talk to me. If Leonard ever gives you any trouble, I’ll be here for you. But I know my son pretty well.”
“He may seem a little cold on the outside, but he’s actually very thoughtful, and he treats the people around him kindly. The fact that he agreed to this engagement means he really cares for you. He’d never force himself into a relationship with someone he didn’t love.”
“Maybe you two aren’t that close yet, but a relationship takes time and patience from both sides. I truly believe you’ll be happy together.”
Mrs. Murphy spoke with a warm, beaming smile, her eyes meeting Marguerite’s.
Was that really true?
Marguerite wasn’t sure how she felt about Leonard, or even why she was agreeing to this engagement in the first place.
But now that they were together, she owed it to both of them to try.
“All right, I’m probably overwhelming you with all this talk. Let’s eat before the food gets cold—just look at this meal! It’s clear my son went out of his way to have everything prepared for you.”
