He’d come here hoping to meet some potential business partners and see if any projects might be a good fit. But to his surprise, he caught sight of Marguerite walking in, her arm linked with Leonard’s.
“I’m single now. I can be with whoever I want—what do I have to be ashamed of?” Marguerite’s lips curled into a frosty, mocking smile, her eyes sharp with disdain.
“Marguerite, drop the self-righteous act,” Benjamin snapped, his tone laced with contempt. “Do you even know who you were just with? That’s Leonard! Do you really think you’re good enough for him? Besides, he’s already engaged. The wedding’s coming up soon. Are you planning on being the one to ruin someone else’s relationship?”
He sounded so righteous, but his eyes betrayed his scorn. He could never have imagined that Leonard’s fiancée—the one everyone talked about—was Marguerite herself.
Marguerite’s expression turned cold. “The one thing I despise most in this world is the kind of woman who comes between a couple. Why would I ever stoop so low?”
“Then stay away from him!” Benjamin shot back, voice rising in anger. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you—Leonard’s not someone you want to mess with. If his fiancée finds out what you two were up to tonight, you know exactly what’ll happen.”
For reasons he couldn’t quite explain, seeing Marguerite with another man set Benjamin’s temper ablaze. The anger just kept simmering, no matter how hard he tried to tamp it down. A moment ago, he’d been ready to storm over and demand an explanation. But when he realized the man by her side was Leonard, he forced himself to hold back. Maybe he’d doubted his own eyes at first, but there was no mistaking Marguerite.
Even as fury ate at him, Benjamin knew Leonard was not someone he could afford to cross.
