The room buzzed with whispers as people began to speculate, curiosity piqued by Leonard and Marguerite’s arrival together. It was clear everyone wanted to know why the two of them had come as a pair.
Marguerite drew herself up, shoulders back and head held high. She stood gracefully at Leonard’s side, her poise undiminished even in the face of his commanding presence. No trace of nervousness flickered across her expression.
“Mr. Murphy, it’s been a while! I didn’t expect to see you here tonight. I just so happen to have a promising new project—would you be interested in hearing more about it?”
“Good evening, Mr. Murphy.”
“Mr. Murphy.”
As they made their way to the center of the ballroom, guests flocked over to greet them with raised glasses and respectful smiles. The air seemed to hum with deference.
Leonard lifted his own glass and spoke, “Allow me to introduce my fiancée, Marguerite. She’s currently holding several patents, and I imagine she’ll have opportunities to work with some of you in the future. I hope you’ll look after her.”
Marguerite froze for a moment, surprised—he hadn’t just presented her as his fiancée; he’d also mentioned her patents to everyone. Was he doing this to help her?
A rush of warmth surged through her. She hadn’t expected to feel so moved.
“Of course, Mr. Murphy. Since you’ve asked, I’ll do everything I can to help.”
“Mrs. Murphy, here’s my card. Feel free to get in touch tomorrow—and send me the details of your patents. If there’s a good fit, I’ll be sure to give them priority consideration!”
“Our company is looking for new ventures right now, and we still have some slots open. I’ll have my assistant contact you tomorrow!”
To them, this was a rare chance to get closer to Leonard, and none of them intended to let it slip away.
“Thank you, everyone,” Marguerite replied with a gracious smile.
“There’s no need to thank us—anything for Mr. Murphy!”
