“And didn’t you tell me to look after Fiona when you found out she was an orphan?”
Marguerite actually let out a laugh, unable to contain her anger.
It was true—when she first learned that Fiona had lost her father young and was adopted by the Fosters, Marguerite felt a pang of sympathy and told Benjamin to watch out for her.
But after everything they’d done, how could she possibly feel sorry for either of them now?
Her eyes grew colder as she looked at Benjamin. “I never told you to ‘look after her’ in your bed.”
“There’s nothing going on between Fiona and me!”
Benjamin snapped, his voice rising. “Do you have to be so suspicious? When did you become so—”
Smack!
The sharp crack of Marguerite’s slap cut him off.
Benjamin turned his head, disbelief flickering in his dark eyes. She’d actually hit him.
Marguerite lowered her hand, her beautiful face icy and determined. “Benjamin, if you’re so eager to take care of Fiona, then go be with her. From now on, whatever happens between you two has nothing to do with me.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Benjamin frowned, irritation flashing across his face. “Are you breaking up with me?”
“Yes.”
Marguerite brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear and spoke each word with calm resolve. “I’ll move my things out of the house as soon as possible. And do me a favor—don’t show up in front of me again. You make me sick.”
With that, she took Laura’s hand and walked out.
It took Benjamin a few seconds to process what had just happened. By the time he stormed after her, Marguerite’s car sped away, leaving him standing alone, his mood plunging deeper into darkness.
He convinced himself Marguerite was just throwing a tantrum. After all these years together, after everything they’d been through, she loved him too much to walk away so easily.
