But he was different.
It felt as if they’d known each other for a long time.
“I… I have a question for you.” Marguerite hesitated for a while before she couldn’t stop herself from speaking.
Leonard lifted his eyes, his tone cool and even. “Go ahead.”
“Why are you so kind to me?”
The words slipped out, and she instantly regretted it, feeling awkward even to herself.
Leonard paused, surprise flickering in his deep, unreadable gaze as he studied her face for a moment before looking away.
“You’re my fiancée,” Leonard replied.
Clearly, she didn’t remember him at all. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have asked something like that.
He didn’t blame Marguerite, though. After all, so much time had passed, and she’d been so young back then.
Feelings needed time to grow. He believed she would eventually fall in love with him.
“Oh…”
Marguerite didn’t want to continue the conversation. She hurried to change the subject.
“It’s getting late, and my hand’s fine. We should get some rest—I’m a bit tired today.”
Eager to escape the awkwardness, Marguerite made for the door.
“All right.”
Leonard agreed without hesitation, clearly noticing how uncomfortable she felt.
He never wanted to make things difficult for Marguerite. Whatever she wanted, he would go along with.
…
Hogan’s tone was gentle but firm.
“I know,” she replied.
After hanging up, Marguerite hurried to pack her things. The sooner she could go home, the better—she didn’t want to waste another minute.
She and Hogan had agreed to meet at Leonard’s place at three in the afternoon. Hogan would pick her up, and they’d head home together.
That afternoon, Hogan arrived early.
Marguerite was ready, suitcase in hand, when she stepped out of her room—and found Leonard there as well.
“Oh, I was just about to call you,” she said. “Hogan and I are heading home for a few days to see my parents. We’ll be back soon, probably within three days.”
She wasn’t sure exactly how long, but that was her best guess.
“He’s coming with us,” she added.
