“I’m planning to stay home for a while this time, spend some time with my parents. If there’s anything urgent at your company, you can head back first. I’ll let you know when I’m ready to return.”
The thought struck Marguerite out of nowhere.
In truth, Leonard had come along precisely because he knew she’d be staying with her family for a while. He’d already cleared his work schedule, determined to remain by her side for as long as she wanted.
“Don’t worry about me,” Leonard replied gently. “Just tell me when you’re ready to go back.”
They sat together in her room for a bit, enjoying the quiet, until her parents called them down for dinner.
The four of them gathered around the dining table, laughter and warmth filling the room. Marguerite sat next to her mother, while Hogan and Leonard joined her father, sharing a glass of wine.
Scenes like this had played out a thousand times in Marguerite’s mind; she’d even dreamed about sitting down to dinner with her parents and Hogan. Yet only now, after all this time, did the dream finally come true.
“Leonard, does your grandmother know you two are back today?” Mrs. Taylor asked as she passed the bread. “I saw her a few days ago and she mentioned how much she misses you. She said when you both get home, you should go and see her as soon as possible.”
“After dinner, you two should pick up a little something and go visit her. She’s been looking forward to it!”
Their families lived just a few streets apart, so it was an easy trip. Leonard, though, had been away for work most of the time, rarely getting a chance to visit, but he’d always been close to his grandmother. She missed him dearly.
“Alright,” Leonard nodded. “I’ll take Marguerite over after dinner.”
Wait, she was going to Leonard’s family home—already?
It all felt a bit sudden. Marguerite realized she wasn’t quite prepared for this. But then she remembered: before they got engaged, they’d promised to visit his grandmother together.
Their families lived so close that it took only a few minutes to reach the Murphy house.
“Grandma, I’m home!” Leonard called as they stepped inside.
Two housekeepers helped Mrs. Murphy in from the front porch, guiding her into the living room.
“Grandma, this is Marguerite, my fiancée,” Leonard said right away, wanting to spare Marguerite any awkwardness.
“So, you’re Marguerite!” Mrs. Murphy’s eyes lit up as she beckoned her over. “Come, sit with me. I’ve been waiting so long for the two of you to come visit.”
She took Marguerite’s hand, smiling warmly. “My grandson has good taste—you're lovely!” The old lady’s affection was unmistakable as she settled Marguerite at her side.
