Benjamin was the first person Hogan had ever truly despised—down to his very bones. Just the sight of the man was enough to make his skin crawl.
Back when Benjamin and Marguerite first got together, Marguerite’s parents were adamantly opposed. Hogan had even done some digging into Benjamin’s background, but he’d felt nothing but a vague dislike for the man.
But Marguerite had been so in love, and all Hogan could do was try to talk their parents around.
Looking back, their parents’ instincts had been spot on. They’d seen right through Benjamin from the start, and Hogan wished he’d trusted their judgment. Now, he saw the man for who he really was—and all he wanted to do was punch him.
“We’re leaving,” Hogan said sharply.
Marguerite didn’t hesitate. She gathered her family and ushered them out, closing the front door firmly behind them.
Seeing Hogan again knocked the wind right out of Benjamin’s arrogant sails. He was suddenly far less cocky and kept his head down, clearly worried about provoking Hogan any further.
“I promise you, he’ll be gone in less than ten minutes,” Marguerite said, her voice steady. She knew Benjamin all too well.
She turned to her mother, guilt weighing on her. “Mom, I had no idea he’d ever find our house. I’m so sorry I made you and Dad worry again. Ever since I met him, you’ve both been constantly anxious because of me, and it’s all my fault.”
Now that she was thinking straight, Marguerite realized just how much pain she’d caused. Her parents had always loved her, and yet she’d let a man come between them for years.
Her mother pulled her close. “Oh, sweetheart, none of that matters now. The only thing that’s important is that you’re safe and back with us. Everything else is in the past.”
