The reason for telling her all this was simple: Hogan wanted his sister to be mentally prepared, to take things seriously and not let her guard down.
“Hogan, why are you telling your sister these things? Leonard’s a good kid—he knows how to handle himself. I’m sure now that they’re together, he’ll sort out any trouble that comes their way,” Mrs. Taylor interjected gently.
“And besides, we know the truth. Just because someone accuses us of something we didn’t do, does that somehow make it real?”
Mrs. Taylor didn’t want her daughter burdened by these worries. She trusted Leonard, believed he was more than capable of handling this.
“Mom, I just don’t want her to take it lightly. She has to be careful—there’s a real chance this woman might try something outrageous,” Hogan insisted. “And honestly, she’s only coming after you because of Leonard. If you’re thinking about getting engaged to him, you have to be ready for anything.”
Hogan’s heart ached for his little sister. She’d just gotten out of a failed relationship, and he’d hoped she’d finally find happiness with someone trustworthy.
Leonard was the kind of man you could rely on, the kind you’d want for a lifetime. It was unfair that these complications still found their way to her doorstep. But there was no turning back now—she’d made her choice. All they could do was face it together and find a solution.
Marguerite nodded. “I know you’re only saying this because you care about me. Don’t worry. I’ll handle it—and I trust Leonard will too.”
“As long as you understand, I’m relieved.” Hogan smiled, finally reassured.
The next day.
“I’ve tried to handle it myself, but those people won’t listen to me—they keep saying Benjamin put them up to it.”
“Ms. Taylor, I really need your help with this. I wouldn’t bother you if I had any other choice…”
Laura sounded frantic, on the verge of despair. Marguerite knew she wouldn’t have called unless it was truly urgent.
“Laura, you should have called me sooner. Next time something like this happens, let me know right away—don’t try to shoulder it all yourself,” Marguerite said, calm and steady. “Don’t worry. Just focus on your own work for now. I’ll take care of this.”
