Marguerite knew exactly why Benjamin was doing all this—pure, spiteful revenge.
On one hand, he was trying to play peacemaker; on the other, he was stabbing her in the back. The irony of it all was almost laughable.
“All right, Ms. Taylor.”
She ended the call and set her phone down, already mulling over her next move. This wasn’t something that could be fixed overnight—it would take time, and a lot of effort.
Over the years, Benjamin had made quite a name for himself in the industry. After they started their company together, business had only grown. If things hadn’t fallen apart between them, there was no doubt their company would be thriving even more now.
The thought made Marguerite’s heart twist painfully. How had the person she once trusted with her whole life become her adversary? This wasn’t how things were supposed to turn out.
Suddenly, a name flashed through her mind—someone who could actually help her out of this mess.
Without hesitation, she picked up her phone and dialed.
“Marguerite? This is a surprise—what’s the occasion?”
“Luke, I need a favor. I’ve run into some trouble with a patent, and I was hoping you could help me sort it out.”
Luke Zade had been a close friend for years, and their relationship had always been easy and genuine.
Now, Luke ran his own successful company with a sizable staff. They’d worked together before, but back then, Benjamin had always been suspicious—after all, Luke was another man.
The arguments that followed were exhausting. Benjamin constantly accused Luke of having ulterior motives, insisting that he was only interested in Marguerite romantically.
Eventually, Marguerite grew tired of the constant fights. She started to distance herself from Luke, hoping to keep the peace at home. But deep down, she’d always known that she and Luke were just friends—nothing more.
Now, she could finally reach out to him again, free of guilt or secrecy, able to simply be friends.
