She had even spent three months collecting and selling scrap just to get by. Her life had only started to improve after she found freelance translation work online.
She had survived those dark days. With her life finally looking up, there was no way she would sell her self-respect now.
With that thought, Niamh lifted her foot and stomped down hard on Jareth’s instep.
“Hiss—” A sharp hiss of pain escaped his lips.
The woman was infuriating.
Niamh shoved him away, ran into the bedroom to grab her pads, and stormed past him on her way out. As she passed, she couldn’t resist muttering, “Pervert.”
Pervert?
Jareth seethed, grinding his teeth.
Back in her own room, Niamh let out a heavy sigh. Jareth was a complete monster, getting more and more out of control.
After using the bathroom, she collapsed onto the bed. It was the first time in over five years she had felt this… relaxed. Lying on the huge, comfortable mattress was pure luxury.
Just as she was about to turn off the light, her phone rang.
It was Cormac.
She didn’t want to answer, but after a moment’s hesitation, she did. They may not have worked out, but he had helped her a lot five years ago.
“Niamh, you’re incredible!” Cormac gushed the moment she picked up. “Everyone at the company is so impressed with you.”
“Cormac, it wasn’t that big of a deal. I just got lucky,” she said modestly.
She wanted to wake up early to go to the main shopping street, both to buy Jareth a wheelchair and to get presents for the kids. In the five years she had lived in Portsmore City, she had barely had a chance to go there.
“Niamh, have you seen Twitter?”
“No, I haven’t,” she replied, surprised. She never used Twitter; she simply didn’t have the time between work and the kids.
“Anything interesting happening?” she asked.
“Niamh, you should just take a look.”
“Okay.”
After hanging up, Niamh opened Twitter. The first thing she saw was the trending story about Jareth and some actress checking into a hotel, complete with photos. The article claimed it happened at ten o’clock that evening.
