“Ha!” Yara laughed, thinking, “Mr. Bragg, when did you become so crude? You’re full of surprises.”
But for the sake of his happiness, she was willing to play the part of the vixen today. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pouting. “Jareth, have you slept with your new secretary?”
Jareth put on a look of regret. “Not yet. The little thing is playing coy, but I see right through her. It’s only a matter of time before I have her in my bed.”
Yara was genuinely impressed with his acting. “Mr. Bragg, what does that make me, then?” she asked, feigning indignation.
“Yara, we agreed when we started seeing each other—no strings attached, no interfering in each other’s lives. Besides, you know I’m not the kind of man to be tied down to just one woman.”
SLAM!
The office door slammed shut, cutting him off.
Niamh felt like she was about to explode.
Scum! Pervert! Bastard!
In that moment, she wanted to skin him alive. The thought that his filthy mouth had kissed her made her stomach turn. She spat on the floor in disgust. Tonight, she was going to brush her teeth until her gums bled. Thank God she hadn’t let him go any further. That would have been the beginning of another nightmare.
Inside the office, the heavy slam of the door was followed by a shared smile between Jareth and Yara. She quickly hopped off his lap. “Mr. Bragg, are you sure your secretary isn’t going to murder me?”
“Don’t worry,” Jareth said with a self-deprecating sigh. “The feelings are all one-sided.”
“Really?” Yara’s expression was one of genuine surprise. “There’s a woman in this world who doesn’t like the great Jareth Bragg?”
“You don’t like me, do you?” he shot back, the fleeting smile gone, replaced by a familiar look of frustration.
She pushed the door open again and walked inside, placing the sample garment on his desk. “Mr. Bragg, the sample garment you asked for.”
Jareth glanced at it and then barked, “This is the wrong one, Ms. Lynn! Don’t you know how to do your job? Did you even confirm this with Calvin?”
Niamh snatched the garment back. “Calvin wasn’t in today. The supervisor of the sample room gave this to me!”
“And you didn’t think to double-check?” he thundered, his anger palpable. Just looking at her set him on edge.
“I’m sorry. I’ll go again.”
When Niamh returned with the correct sample, Jareth was gone. She placed it on his desk, and a moment later, her phone buzzed with a message from him: [Ms. Lynn, something came up. I’ve left for the day.]
