"Of course," Jareth replied without hesitation.
Niamh nodded, a plan already forming in her mind.
"However, Ms. Lynn," he added, "can I occasionally request a specific dish?"
As she headed back to the kitchen, Niamh said over her shoulder, "Just let me know what you want in advance."
Her words had barely faded when Jareth called out, "In that case, I'd like tortellini for breakfast this morning."
Niamh stopped in her tracks and spun around, glaring at him. This man certainly didn't waste any time making himself at home. After a moment, she said through gritted teeth, "I'm sorry, Mr. Bragg, but we're having sandwiches this morning. You can have your tortellini tomorrow."
"But I really want it this morning," he whined, his tone surprisingly petulant.
Niamh was speechless. She was tempted to tell him to order takeout if he was so desperate.
"Ms. Lynn, how about I help you? Please, just make a bowl for me?" he pleaded.
Though internally fuming, Niamh found herself giving in when faced with his pleading expression. "Fine," she sighed. Did she owe him something in a past life?
As Niamh began preparing the sandwiches, Jareth wheeled himself over and sat next to her. When he saw what she was making, his eyes widened in surprise. "Ms. Lynn, you know how to make sandwiches? Your technique is so good, you could open your own restaurant. Why don't you quit your job as my assistant? I'll invest, and you can open a shop. What do you think?"
"Oh, then that's fine, that's fine," he said hastily. "Just pretend I didn't say anything. Actually, chives can be quite good. I'm sure I'll get used to them."
The children liked them, and he wouldn't deprive them of something they enjoyed just for his own preference.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Bragg," Niamh explained, her tone softening slightly. "My mornings are very rushed, so I can only prepare one type of filling. When I have more time, I'll make a batch with a filling you like."
She felt she needed to clarify, just in case he decided to hold it against her at work. As for when she'd actually have the time, that was another story. A freeloader shouldn't be so picky.
"No, no, it's fine. I'll eat whatever you're all eating," Jareth insisted.
