Then, Aurelia lowered her voice to a whisper. “Mr. Bragg, I don’t care if you’re our real daddy or not. In my heart, you are. When no one’s around, can I call you Daddy? Please?”
Joy instantly lit up Jareth’s face. He couldn’t believe how quickly Aurelia had warmed up to him, even wanting to call him Daddy.
“Of course, you can,” he answered without hesitation.
Aurelia leaned in, her small mouth close to his ear, and whispered, “Da-ddy…”
To Jareth, that word was the most beautiful sound in the world. In that moment, tears welled up in his eyes.
“Yes,” he responded, his voice thick with emotion.
Noticing the change in his expression and the raw emotion in his eyes, Niamh watched in confusion. What on earth had Aurelia said to him?
“Daddy,” Aurelia whispered again.
“Yes,” Jareth answered.
She gave his cheek another quick kiss before skipping off after Phaedra.
Jove walked over, his face full of gratitude. “Thank you so much for today, Mr. Bragg.”
“It was nothing,” Jareth said humbly. He wondered if the children would still be so grateful if they believed he was their real father. They’d probably resent him.
After Jove left, Niamh approached Jareth and stared at him intently.
“Wilbur, back to Honest Haven,” Jareth instructed the driver.
Niamh frowned. Why would they go back to the neighborhood on a Monday morning instead of to work?
Jareth explained, “I’m moving in today, Ms. Lynn, and my place is a mess. I need you to help me tidy up. You can skip the office today.”
What? He wanted her to help him clean his house? That didn’t seem appropriate. Didn’t he have a girlfriend?
“Is there a problem, Ms. Lynn?” Jareth asked coolly, glancing at her expression.
“Hehe, of course not, Mr. Bragg. I’d be happy to,” she said, forcing a smile despite the hundred objections screaming in her head. She thought, “But Mr. Bragg, what am I supposed to say if your girlfriend shows up while I’m cleaning your house? Won’t that cause a misunderstanding?”
