“And if she doesn’t?” Steven’s voice was dangerously quiet.
Bess wailed. “Then I’m calling the police! Assault is a crime! My own parents have never hit me like that. Who does she think she is? She has no class! I’m going to make her pay!”
Steven’s tone remained chillingly calm. “Go ahead. Gordon, escort this young lady out of the hotel.”
I paused, surprised. I had expected him to drag me out to apologize to Bess just to avoid trouble.
Bess’s crying choked off. “You… you’re kicking me out?”
“You want to have my wife arrested, and you expect me to let you stay here?” His voice was devoid of emotion. “Who do you think you are?”
Bess was silent. Then Verna’s anxious voice cut in. “Mr. Lancaster, my friend misspoke. I apologize to you and Mrs. Lancaster on her behalf. We won’t call the police. We were in the wrong. It’s too dangerous for women to be out alone at night. Could we please just stay for one night? We’ll leave in the morning.”
The door clicked shut. The hotel’s soundproofing was excellent; I couldn’t hear anything else, not even Steven’s reply. But I figured with Verna pleading, he probably wouldn’t refuse.
I didn’t care either way. If they didn’t stay, I’d be happy. If they did, it would give me a chance to catch Steven cheating. It was a win-win.
I looked down at my filthy hands in disgust and hurried into the bathroom to wash them. Staring at my reflection—young, beautiful, alluring—I thought about the fight, about the satisfying thwack of the steak against their faces, and their shocked, furious expressions.
I sat down and lifted the lid off the steak. The aroma was so tempting it made my mouth water. But his words soured my mood instantly. After the fight we just had, I didn’t even want to look at him, let alone share a room.
I stabbed my knife into the steak with a vicious thud, my face a mask of indifference. “Get. Out.”
Steven’s dark eyes were fixed on me. “I can sleep on the sofa.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, a cold, bitter sound. Finally, I looked up at him.
