He also had two huskies that were constantly destroying his house. He had to wake up early every morning to walk them one at a time because they were too strong for him to handle together. He had been dragged to the ground more times than he could count, but the dogs had also given him a toned physique. His life was a chaotic mix of adorable and infuriating.
As Gordon swiped the key card to the suite, I was still laughing. “When we get back, I’ll have to come and meet your dogs.” Once I had my own life and my own money, I was going to get a dog and spoil it rotten.
Gordon was about to reply with a smile when his expression suddenly froze. He straightened up, his demeanor turning serious. “Mr. Lancaster.”
I followed him inside and saw Steven sitting on the sofa in the living room. He had a glass of water in one hand and a cigarette in the other, his legs crossed. His handsome, pale face had a bit more color than yesterday, but his gaze, as it swept over me and Gordon, was sharp enough to cut glass. The air was thick with a palpable tension.
My smile faded. I heard him ask in a low voice, “Gordon, why didn’t you answer your phone?”
Gordon’s expression tightened. He set down my bags and took out his phone. “I’m sorry, Mr. Lancaster. My phone died. Did you need something?”
Steven didn’t answer. His gaze shifted to me. “Was your phone dead too?”
I checked my phone. Eight missed calls. They must have come in while Gordon and I were on our way back, talking about his dogs. “It was on silent. I didn’t hear it.”
I turned to leave, but before I had taken two steps, he grabbed my wrist. I looked back. His long fingers were wrapped around my arm. He was still holding the glass of water in his other hand.
“Where were you?” he asked.
I tried to pull my hand away, but his grip was too strong. “Shopping,” I said honestly.
“Shopping? With Gordon?” His handsome face was dark with a brewing storm, his voice dangerously low. “Zephyra, did I ignore you so much in the past that now you crave attention? Do you just love having men fall all over you, orbiting around you?”
