I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 141

I froze, the words not quite registering. “I was just shopping with Gordon. How on earth does that mean I like having men fawn all over me?”

His face was a blank mask. “Is that not what it is? Have you ever seen a woman go shopping with her secretary, laughing and joking, even arranging to meet up again after returning home?”

A sharp, angry laugh escaped me. So, he was accusing me of having an affair with Gordon, or at least planning to start one?

“That’s just your narrow-minded view. Wealthy socialites go shopping with more than just secretaries; they have entire security details. Are you suggesting they’re sleeping with all their bodyguards, too?”

Steven’s thin lips pressed into a hard line. “As you said, *details*. Plural.”

My expression turned to ice. “Steven, don’t push it. It was bad enough living like a widow before the divorce, but now you expect me to live like a nun? Am I only allowed to be around women?”

“So a whole team of secretaries is fine, but one is an affair? How did you ever become a CEO with logic that twisted? What could I possibly do in broad daylight, in a store full of salesclerks? Seduce him right there? If you caught me sneaking out with him at night, then you’d have a right to question me.”

Steven glanced at me, his voice laced with scorn. “By the time you're done painting the town red, the horns you're putting on my head will probably be glowing.”

I let out another incredulous, angry laugh, my mind reeling with a mix of frustration and disbelief.

“Steven, are you paranoid? Does any man I get even remotely close to make you think I’m some promiscuous tramp trying to cheat on you? First Horace, then Jacob, and now you’re even suspicious of Gordon.”

Maybe it was because in my past life, I was so devoted to him that I pushed away every other man, even Horace. The Steven from back then never policed me like this. He only ever cared about Horace, and that was because they’d landed in the hospital the first time they met. But even then, as much as I loved him, I never suspected him of cheating the way he suspects me now. If he got close to another woman, I might have been jealous, but I trusted his character. I never would have maliciously assumed they were having an affair.

A flicker of violence passed through Steven’s dark eyes, but he didn’t answer my question. His voice seemed to scrape its way out of his throat.

I gave him the silent treatment, a cold war that lasted until the day his condition stabilized and it was time to negotiate with Lucid Works.

He was impeccably dressed in a suit, his hair slicked back, revealing a clean, handsome brow. He looked refined and elegant.

We met in the hallway. He shot me a cold glare, his eyes lingering for a second on the mark on my neck before he turned and walked away without a word.

I couldn't be bothered with him. That was Steven for you—a perfect, noble Mr. Lancaster in front of others, but a moody, unrestrained tyrant with a chronic case of resting bitch face when he was with me.
