I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 17

He was the one who had schemed to get me married into the Lancaster family, all so he could leech off their connections and slowly suck them dry.

Ever since I got married, every time he called me home, it was for something like this.

In this life and the last, I was nothing more than a tool for his ambition. The most common thing I heard from him was to keep Steven happy so he could exploit the connection for his own gain.

He never once cared if I was happy in my marriage. And yet, for the sake of a sliver of familial affection, I always humbled myself and did his bidding. In a way, Steven was right. I was a parasitic vine, unable to survive without him.

My stomach churned. I took another bite of fish, my eyes filled with mockery as I said calmly, “He doesn’t owe us anything, and I don’t want to be indebted to him. If you want a business investment, you can ask him yourself.”

It was the first time I had ever defied him. Everyone at the table stared at me in shock, as if they couldn’t believe that I, the meek pushover, was capable of talking back.

His authority challenged, Martin’s face contorted with rage. He slammed his hand on the table and pointed a finger at me. “Zephyra, how did I raise such an ungrateful wretch?”

“I’m still healthy and earning money, and you already dare to disrespect me like this. What will you be like when I’m old?”

“Let me tell you, you are my daughter, and I will always be your father! You married a rich husband, so what’s wrong with me asking you for a little money? You will do this for me, whether you like it or not!”

Janice grabbed Martin’s arm, pretending to calm him down, before turning to me with a placating smile. “Zephyra, dear, the Jones family is your foundation. A strong family at your back is what gives you standing in your husband’s home, isn’t that right?”

“It’s not a big deal. Just talk to Mr. Lancaster, get a little funding, and our business will be up and running. Your father will be happy, and our family will be better off. It’s a win–win, don’t you see?”

A cold smile touched my lips. Sacrificing me to benefit them was certainly a win for them.

But I didn’t expose their scheme just yet. Let him be arrogant for a few more days. The day would come when I would watch his life’s work crumble to dust, see him abandoned by everyone, and find him kneeling in regret.

“Go ahead with the company’s project. We’ll deal with the rest when the time comes.”
