If he came back, I promised myself I would forgive everything, and we could live happily ever after.
But as the blood drained from my body, I lost consciousness.
When I woke up, I was in the hospital.
A surge of joy washed over me, and I eagerly asked the nurse if my husband had brought me in.
The nurse shook her head. “It was your housekeeper, Luna. She found you when she came to clean.”
Steven never came home.
It was on that same day that I was diagnosed with stage-four stomach cancer. Not long after, I died a miserable death in that very hospital.
“Zephyra, what are you spacing out for? We need to hurry; Steven will be getting off work soon.”
Antonia’s voice yanked me from my memories. I blinked, realizing Steven’s one true love was long gone, leaving only Antonia staring at me impatiently.
“Antonia,” I asked quietly, “are you really happy for me?”
Antonia looked momentarily confused, then answered with defensive righteousness. “Of course, I am.”
Looking at her innocent, pretty face, I scoffed internally.
Happy for me? If she truly saw me as a sister, she wouldn’t be pushing me to bake a cake when she knew I was unwell.
She was in love with Steven and wanted to take my place. I was just a convenient excuse for her to get close to him. I knew this in my past life but kept quiet out of a misplaced sense of family loyalty.
This life, I wasn't going to tolerate anyone or maintain any fake relationships. I was done.
I pulled my arm from her grasp, my expression cold.
“He’s not coming home today, and I’m not baking a cake. There’s nothing to celebrate, so you can go do whatever it is you need to do.”
