I didn't pay much attention to his last sentence, my mind stuck on what he’d said before: *Verna showed up on her own.*
This contradicted everything I knew about their relationship. Initially, Verna and Steven weren't close. He was the one who fell first, pursuing her relentlessly for five years, using every trick in the book before finally winning her over. I had always assumed he had called her for help, and that Verna, being kind-hearted, couldn't refuse. Larry probably didn't know the full story, or maybe he was just trying to mediate.
But it didn't matter to me anymore. Their relationship was their business. As long as I kept my distance and managed my own life, I could avoid the tragedy of my past life.
Noticing I was lost in thought, Larry spoke again, his voice gentle. “Ma’am, I’ve been Mr. Lancaster’s driver for years, and I’ve only ever seen him seem… normal when you’re around. Since you’ve been gone, he’s back to…”
Before he could finish, the front passenger door opened. Larry immediately fell silent. I watched as Steven’s elegant, long-fingered hand placed a beautifully wrapped gift bag on the passenger seat.
It was too ornate for his mother; it looked like a gift for someone my age. It had to be for Verna.
Steven glanced over at me, as if to confirm I was in the car, before walking around to the back. A long, well-toned leg appeared first, followed by the rest of his frame as he settled into the seat beside me. The closing door sent a gust of air through the car, rustling the hair on my forehead. Along with it came the faint, captivating scent of orchids.
The car began to move.
I smoothed my hair and turned toward the source of the fragrance. A near-perfect profile met my eyes. A strong nose, a sharp jawline, and deep-set eyes that held both affection and a cool distance. He sat tall and straight, his frame lean and powerful. His tailored suit was paired with a vibrant plaid tie. It wasn't as stylish as the combinations I used to pick for him, but on Steven’s flawless face, it created an air of refined villainy.
No wonder I had been so completely captivated by him in my past life. That face was a masterpiece.
