I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 28

When we arrived at the Lancaster estate, the grounds were already filled with guests dressed in expensive suits and gowns. They mingled in small groups, their faces relaxed, their smiles pleasant. The Lancaster family was vast and powerful; even a small family dinner was an occasion for competition and comparison, a chance to show off and avoid being looked down upon.

I scanned the crowd but didn’t see Grandpa Marico. Instead, I spotted Mary, impeccably dressed and laughing animatedly with a group of relatives. Just like last time, this was her party.

The moment Mary saw Steven, her carefully maintained smile widened, and she immediately started walking toward us. Trailing behind her was a young man of about eighteen or nineteen. His features bore a slight resemblance to Steven’s, but his eyes held a mischievous, roguish glint, lacking any of Steven's composure. It was Steven’s good-for-nothing younger brother, Thomas Lancaster.

“Steven, darling, I’ve been waiting for you! What took you so long?” Mary gushed.

“We ran into some traffic,” Steven replied politely.

Mary studied his face, her hand reaching up to stroke his cheek. “You look like you’ve lost weight. Luna told me your stomach has been bothering you. How are you feeling?”

Steven subtly pulled away. “Don’t worry, it’s much better.”

Mary’s benevolent gaze lingered on Steven for a moment before she turned to me, her expression instantly shifting to one of blame. “And you, his wife, how have you been taking care of your husband? Don’t you know he’s been unwell?”
