I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 29

His words set off a murmur of gossip throughout the room. Mary stared at me, her eyes like ice. “What are you still standing here for? Get to the kitchen.”

I crossed my arms, a small smile playing on my lips. “Don’t you have cooks for that? By asking me to cook now, are you treating me like the help, or are you just trying to give me a hard time?”

Mary looked stunned that I would talk back. Her face darkened. “What nonsense are you talking about? I’m just asking you to show off your skills. How is that giving you a hard time or treating you like the help?”

Thomas, equally incredulous, looked me up and down. “As a Lancaster daughter-in-law, you dare to defy your elders after only a year of marriage? In a few years, will you be walking all over my mother?”

The guests exchanged glances, their eyes now tinged with distaste as they looked at me. I paid them no mind; I had endured those same looks in my past life.

Back then, I hadn't dared to defy Mary. I had cooked a meal for everyone, exhausting myself in the process, only to be humiliated. Mary had claimed I hadn't put my heart into it, that the food was deliberately terrible, something not even a dog would eat. When I tried to defend myself, my protests were labeled as disrespect, and I was subjected to another round of ridicule from both mother and son. A few people had tried to smooth things over, saying that for a young lady from a good family, my cooking was impressive enough. But Mary just stared at me coldly and said I was worse than a maid.

The sting of her words still lingered. This time, I would not give them what they wanted.

Thomas sauntered over to me, a malicious grin on his face. He circled me twice. “Zephyra, has my brother spoiled you rotten? Are you going to cook or not?”

I met his gaze with cold eyes and a sharp smile. “I’m not. Are you going to threaten me?”
