His hand slammed against the wall beside my head, trapping me. The cool surface sent a shiver down my spine. I looked up into his sharp, dark eyes. His handsome face was tense, like the calm before a storm. I blinked, guessing he had just received an earful upstairs, and felt a flicker of unease. “Lesson over? We can go now.”
I tried to slip out from under his other arm, but his hand shot out, blocking my escape. In an instant, I was completely caged in his arms. My heart pounded. “What are you doing?”
His flawless face was taut with anger as he leaned down, his voice dangerously low. “What am I doing? Isn’t this what you’ve always wanted?”
My heart seized. I stared at him in disbelief. “Steven, are you insane?” I couldn’t believe such a vulgar thing had come out of his mouth.
He locked his eyes on mine, moving closer still. His tall, broad frame completely overshadowed me, the sense of pressure suffocating. “Playing hard to get with this divorce nonsense, repeatedly claiming I can’t perform, and now you pull out a virginity certificate. Zephyra, you’ve really outdone yourself.”
I watched him grind his teeth and offered a humorless smile. “Oh, you’re too kind. But I have your mother to thank. She’s been nagging me for a year, trying to force-feed me that disgusting tonic. If she won’t let up, then I have to return the favor, don’t I?”
The fury in his eyes was palpable. “It all comes down to this, doesn’t it? You’re lonely. You’re trying to force me to sleep with you. You’re so shameless, Zephyra. Fine. I’ll grant your wish. I’ll show you exactly what I can do.”
His venomous tone sent a jolt of alarm through me. This was bad. I tried to escape, aiming to bite his arm, but a large hand clamped down on the back of my neck, pressing me back against the cold wall.
I wiped my own lips, his blood still on them, and tilted my chin up. “You kissed me. Did I give you permission? What are we to each other?”
In our past life, I had given him my heart and soul for five years, but he had thrown it all away for his precious Verna, leaving me to die without a second thought. This time, I was done with him. I had asked for a divorce. He had no right to kiss me.
Steven’s long lashes fluttered, a faint blush creeping up his neck. He looked momentarily flustered, as if he had just realized what he’d done, but the embarrassment was quickly replaced by annoyance. He stared at me, his eyes cold. “You’re asking what we are to each other?”
