I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 38

"I'm fine."

Jacob’s anger subsided slightly, but he was still fuming. "That's no reason to shove someone. And he grabbed your hand." The more he spoke, the more a jealous edge crept into his voice.

For some reason, Steven’s expression darkened even more. "Don't just stand there talking about it," he said coldly. "Her hand still needs to be treated. Take her to get some first aid."

No matter how annoyed Jacob was, his concern for Verna won out. He quickly led her back to the office to tend to her injury.

Soon, only Steven and I were left in the hospital room.

A dead silence fell over the room.

Steven stared at me, his eyes burning with a savage fury, as if he wanted to devour me whole. He took a slow step toward me.

"Are you satisfied now, Zephyra?"

I rubbed my still-aching wrist and looked at his incandescent rage, utterly bewildered. "Satisfied with what?"

I had accidentally burned someone, and before I could even make amends, I was thrown to the floor, my wrist screaming in pain. I couldn't imagine a single reason to be satisfied.

A cold sneer escaped his lips. He suddenly seized my chin, his voice laced with venom. "Still playing innocent? Zephyra, I thought you were just incompetent and greedy for petty gains. I never realized you had it in you to start seducing men. You’re thrilled to have someone protecting you, aren’t you? Hm?"

His tone grew harsher with each word, and my heart hammered in my chest. Dizzy from his accusations, I let out a sudden, bitter laugh. "To hear you talk, it sounds like I’m not just useless, but also promiscuous."

Seeing me smile only made the handsome lines of his face twist into a more sinister expression. He tightened his grip on my chin. "Aren't you? It was him yesterday, and him again today. When did you two get together? Is he the reason you suddenly want a divorce?"

The color drained from my face. His words felt like a physical blow, and I stared at him in disbelief. "You think I burned Verna on purpose?"

His eyes were clouded with suspicion. "Didn't you?"

Even though my love for him had died in my past life, his accusations still pierced my heart. A long-forgotten sting of pain shot through me, leaving me cold to the bone. Verna’s hands were precious, but were mine worthless? He ignored my pain and had already convicted me of deliberately harming her…

I let out a self-mocking laugh and gave up trying to explain. "Fine. You’re right about everything. I did it to get back at Verna. She's wonderful, but you like her, so I don't. I deliberately burned her hand to ruin her career. I even seduced her boyfriend on purpose. I'm just that vicious, that promiscuous. If you have any sense, you’ll divorce me immediately. What are you waiting for?"

I don't know which of my words set him off, but his dark eyes locked onto mine, a vein throbbing on his forehead. He was in a rare, towering rage. "Zephyra, if I don't divorce you, you'll really start to think I'm a spineless coward, won't you?" he snarled, a chilling smile on his face. "Fine. I'll grant your wish. See you tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock."
