"I'm fine."
Jacob’s anger subsided slightly, but he was still fuming. "That's no reason to shove someone. And he grabbed your hand." The more he spoke, the more a jealous edge crept into his voice.
For some reason, Steven’s expression darkened even more. "Don't just stand there talking about it," he said coldly. "Her hand still needs to be treated. Take her to get some first aid."
No matter how annoyed Jacob was, his concern for Verna won out. He quickly led her back to the office to tend to her injury.
Soon, only Steven and I were left in the hospital room.
A dead silence fell over the room.
Steven stared at me, his eyes burning with a savage fury, as if he wanted to devour me whole. He took a slow step toward me.
"Are you satisfied now, Zephyra?"
I rubbed my still-aching wrist and looked at his incandescent rage, utterly bewildered. "Satisfied with what?"
I had accidentally burned someone, and before I could even make amends, I was thrown to the floor, my wrist screaming in pain. I couldn't imagine a single reason to be satisfied.
A cold sneer escaped his lips. He suddenly seized my chin, his voice laced with venom. "Still playing innocent? Zephyra, I thought you were just incompetent and greedy for petty gains. I never realized you had it in you to start seducing men. You’re thrilled to have someone protecting you, aren’t you? Hm?"
His tone grew harsher with each word, and my heart hammered in my chest. Dizzy from his accusations, I let out a sudden, bitter laugh. "To hear you talk, it sounds like I’m not just useless, but also promiscuous."
Seeing me smile only made the handsome lines of his face twist into a more sinister expression. He tightened his grip on my chin. "Aren't you? It was him yesterday, and him again today. When did you two get together? Is he the reason you suddenly want a divorce?"
