I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 37

It was strange. In my past life, I had no connection to Verna, let alone her boyfriend, whose name I never even learned. But in this life, by some twist of fate, I had met them both, and we were even on friendly terms.

Jacob’s ears were still red. “Oh, right, Verna, this is the designer I was telling you about, Ms. Jones. She’s the one I almost hit with my car yesterday. She was so nice about it, she didn’t even get mad.”

Verna looked at me more closely, her eyes widening in recognition. “Wait, aren’t you the woman who burned her hand in the utility room the other night? You left without saying anything, before I could even treat it. How is your hand now?” She gently took my hand, her expression serious and her voice soft. “Good, no scar. You need to be more careful next time.”

Her kindness and grace made me feel small. There was truly no comparison between us. No wonder Steven loved her. I liked her too. If I were a man, I’d want to marry her.

I lowered my head with a bitter smile. “Okay, thank you, Doctor.”

Verna smiled back. “Don’t thank me. A woman’s hands are important. You have to protect them.”

I nodded in agreement. Especially in my profession, where my hands and my mind were my livelihood. I couldn't afford any accidents.

After a brief chat, I went to pay for a full check-up. I knew it wasn't cancer yet. My stomach problems in my past life were entirely self-inflicted. I would cook for Steven and then not eat if he didn’t come home. My meals were irregular, I was always stressed, and whenever my stomach hurt, I would just take some pills and ignore it. Over time, it developed into cancer. This time, as long as I took care of myself, ate on time, and stayed happy, it wouldn't be a major issue.

Some of the test results came back quickly. I returned to the room to show them to Verna. Jacob, seeing my dry lips, poured me a glass of water. I was focused on the report and didn’t realize he was handing me a cup of hot water. The cup was scalding, and I instinctively dropped it. The hot water splashed all over Verna’s hands.

She hissed in pain, the report falling to the floor.
