I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 4

His expression darkened completely, a rare flash of real anger in his eyes. Standing nearly six-foot-three, his towering frame loomed over me, radiating an intense pressure.

“You were the one desperate to marry me, feeding Grandpa all that nonsense to force my hand. And now you want a divorce just like that? What do you take me for?”-

He grabbed my chin again, his gaze glacial. “Some kind of amusement, is that it?”

Forced to meet his eyes, I felt an unexpected jolt in my heart.

Although we were partners in an arranged marriage, my family was leagues below the Lancasters. If it weren't for an old promise between our grandfathers that resulted in our childhood engagement, I never would have been qualified to marry him.

Steven had always been vehemently against the arrangement. If his grandfather hadn’t fallen gravely ill and compelled him to go through with it, I would have never become his wife. Now, by demanding a divorce, I was, in a way, provoking him.

“I’m not treating you as an amusement. I’m serious. I’ve met the woman you love. That doctor—she’s beautiful and gentle, a perfect match for you. If we get divorced, you’ll be free to pursue her openly, won’t you?”

I said it to give him a push.

The woman he loved was about to go abroad. Once she left, he would finally realize how deeply he loved her, that he couldn't let her go. That's when he would begin his relentless, possessive pursuit of her.

And I, the villainess in this cliché drama, couldn't just occupy the role in name only, causing trouble like I did last time.

I needed to exit the stage before the main characters’ love story truly began. That was the only way to avoid the tragedy of my past life.

Steven's face turned impossibly grim, his dark, piercing eyes locking onto mine. "You've met her? No wonder you're acting so differently. What are you trying to threaten me with?"
