“As for her,” he continued, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl, “stay away from her. If I find out you’ve laid a hand on her, I guarantee your life will become a living hell.”
His words struck me like a physical blow. In his mind, I had always been a jealous, malicious shrew.
I stared at his grimly handsome face, unable to suppress a cold, mocking laugh. “It seems you have a problem not just with your ears, but with your brain as well. If I wanted to hurt her, do you really think I’d be foolish enough to announce it to you first?”
“I’m done arguing with you. I don’t have the energy. I’m simply informing you that I am divorcing you. I’ll explain everything to Grandpa so you won’t be blamed. Think about it.”
With that, I pushed his hand away and stormed upstairs, leaving the dirty dishes on the table.
A moment later, the sound of a slamming door echoed from downstairs. Steven was gone.
I let out a long sigh. Even with the knowledge of a past life, his words still stung.
Thankfully, it was just a sting, not the heart-wrenching agony I used to feel.
I took my medication and lay down, trying to process everything, when my phone suddenly rang.
Glancing at the caller ID, I saw it was Mary. I bit my lip and answered. “Hello?”
A booming voice immediately filled the line. “Zephyra, have you been taking all the medicines and remedies I sent you?”
My eyes drifted to a corner of the room where a pile of unopened boxes lay. “Yes,” I lied smoothly, “I’m almost finished with all of them.”
Mrs. Lancaster sounded pleased. “So? Any news? Are you showing any signs of pregnancy yet?”
I felt a familiar wave of exhaustion. For a year, Steven’s mother had been relentlessly pressuring me to get pregnant.
Now, on the verge of a divorce, I wanted to avoid any more drama.
“Mom, having a child is a matter of fate. If it’s not meant to be, we can’t force it.”
