Horace smiled faintly. "Rachel. Long time no see."
Rachel huffed. "Don't give me that. You didn't come back to see me. Do you know how many times I've tried to get in touch?"
Horace just offered another dazzling smile.
Judging by her tone, she had known he was back for a while and had deliberately kept it from me. I got up to meet her, pulling her aside to whisper reproachfully, "Rachel, I can't believe you and Horace kept his return a secret from me. But how could you tell him everything that's going on with me?"
Rachel first tried to be cute, then explained, "I only told him you were short on cash and about your uncle. I didn't say a single word about the divorce or you looking for a job." She then shot a quick glance toward Horace and leaned in closer. "Besides, if I had told you he was back, would you have agreed to see him? Zephyra, we're all best friends. Are you really going to let a little guilt keep you from ever seeing him again?"
I couldn't argue, because she was right. I was incredibly lucky to have these two friends back in my life.
Seeing I had nothing more to say, Rachel linked her arm through mine. "Let's eat. Horace, I brought you a portion of the same."
Rachel handed us each a container. When I opened mine, I saw it was noodle soup from my favorite place. Except… it was full of cilantro.
Rachel was already digging in with gusto. "So good," she mumbled between bites. "Everything tastes better when you're starving. Zephyra, hurry up and eat before it gets cold."
I bit my lip. I didn't have much of an appetite to begin with, and the cilantro made it worse. But I didn't want Rachel to worry, so I forced myself to try.
Without a word, Horace began picking all the cilantro out of my bowl and putting it into his own.
I looked at him, surprised. Rachel was shocked too. "Oh no, the restaurant must have ignored my note! I specifically asked for no cilantro."
