I quickly sidestepped to avoid a collision.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the person was wearing a floral shirt. Before I could see his face, he called out my name with a cheerful drawl.
I looked up sharply. The man had a roguish grin, a pair of sunglasses hooked onto the collar of his shirt, and a handsome, almost pretty face.
"Myron."
Myron's grin widened as he took a step closer, his deep brown eyes looking me up and down. "Well, this is a coincidence. Fancy meeting you at the hospital."
Not a coincidence. A curse. The moment I saw him, I was reminded of my disastrous interview.
My face remained impassive. I had no desire to get tangled up with him. "Yeah, quite a coincidence," I said dismissively, turning to leave.
"Don't be in such a hurry," Myron said, catching up to me, his devilishly handsome face full of amusement. "What are you doing at the hospital? Are you sick? Why isn't Steven with you?"
I kept walking, my voice cold. "You ask too many questions. Mind your own business."
Myron made a tsking sound. "Your temper has certainly gotten worse. You don't look sick, so why are you here?" His gaze suddenly sharpened, and after studying me for a moment, he broke into a sly grin. "Don't tell me you're pregnant. Here for a check-up? Or an abortion?!"
He sounded like he'd discovered a new continent, his voice rising in pitch. People in the hallway turned to stare at me.
How humiliating. I shot him a glare. "What are you talking about? You're so young, but your brain seems to be malfunctioning already. Are you here to accompany one of your little flings to an abortion clinic?"
Myron stared at me, stunned. I landed another blow. "Besides, you’ve been best friends with Steven for years. Don’t you know he can’t get it up?"
The dumbfounded look on Myron's face dissolved into a burst of laughter. He doubled over, roaring. "Steven can't get it up? He actually can't perform! Is that true?" He gave me a thumbs-up. "You've really changed."
He continued, "Before, all you ever thought about was what to cook for Steven, counting the minutes until he got off work. You were so rigid, never dared to say a harsh word or show any temper. Now you're vibrant and full of life. It's a much better look on you."
I wasn't rigid in my past life; I was just deeply in love.
I gave him a look that could kill and stalked off, done with the conversation.
Myron caught up again. "Didn't you come to my company for an interview? I saw your resume. I can't believe you're Somania. But you left before the interview. Does that mean you don't want to work for me? Don't worry, Steven is Steven, and I'm me. If you work for my company, I'll treat you right."
He followed me all the way back to the room. When he saw the man in the bed, he looked slightly surprised. "Who's this?"
I poured a cup of hot water, dipped a cotton swab in it, and gently dabbed it on Uncle Julian's cracked, pale lips. "My Uncle Julian. He just got out of surgery."
Myron glanced around the room as if looking for something, then turned back to me with a puzzled expression. "Where's Steven? Your uncle is in trouble; why isn't he here to see him?"
After moistening my uncle's lips, I poured myself a glass of water and blew on it to cool it down. "He's my uncle. I can take care of him myself. I don't need him."
Myron's expression became thoughtful, his eyes changing. He said his goodbyes and left. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I had no idea that this encounter would cause me major trouble down the line.
Sitting in the chair, watching Uncle Julian murmur in his post-anesthesia haze, I couldn't help but think of Steven. He already believed I was just playing hard to get, that my desire for a divorce was a ploy for money. Now that I had stood him up at the courthouse, he would be convinced I had overplayed my hand and was too scared to go through with it, further proof that it was all a game.
I sighed and took out my phone to call him. No matter what, this divorce had to happen. I had to get the money I was owed from Steven…
