I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 48

I remained unfazed, not letting her get to me. I glanced down at her name tag: Jessica.

No wonder she looked familiar. We had crossed paths in my previous life, and this same Jessica had given me a hard time then, too. Since I rarely came to the office, no one recognized me. I had tried to explain that I was Steven's wife, but she refused to believe me, convinced I was just another woman trying to seduce him to climb the social ladder.

To prove my identity, I had called and texted Steven, hoping he would vouch for me. But he was in a meeting and didn't answer. I didn't dare disturb him further, so after enduring a barrage of insults from Jessica, I was thrown out. It was winter then, and like a fool, I waited outside because I was worried he would miss his lunch and upset his stomach. I waited until the sun was setting before his assistant finally came to get me. He never offered an explanation or publicly acknowledged my identity. It was as if I really were just some nobody trying to marry into wealth…

My gaze turned icy, and the temperature around me seemed to drop. "I have something to discuss with Steven. You'd be wise to let me in. Otherwise, you'll regret it."

Jessica sneered. "Who do you think you are, threatening me on my own turf!"

Her raised voice drew the attention of everyone nearby, and a crowd started to form. Seeing this, Jessica became even more emboldened. "Everyone, look at this! This woman is threatening me just to see Mr. Lancaster. And look at her—her clothes are a mess, her makeup is smeared. Who knows how many men she's been with? The nerve of her to shout at me! So shameless!"

I scoffed. I was dressed perfectly fine. My makeup was only faded because I had spent a day and a night at the hospital caring for Uncle Julian. She was as nasty as ever.

"You seem to know a lot about it. Is that experience you gained from sleeping with countless men?"
